Traditional flavors of Ukraine

Traditional Ukrainian food is very diverse!

 

Grain and vegetable-based dishes probably take the major place, since Ukraine is one of the largest agricultural countries in the world.

 

One dish can be cooked in hundreds of different ways, the recipes differ from region to region and from family to family.

 

Here are some of the most famous traditional Ukrainian dishes:

Borshch

Every Ukrainian region has its own borshch recipe. Differences between particular varieties may regard the type of stock used (meat, bone, or both), the type of meat (beef, pork, poultry, etc.), the choice of vegetables and the method of cutting and cooking them.

Dumplings (Varenyky)

Same as with borsch, each region has it is own unique recipe for dumplings. They can be savoury or sweet. Among most popular fillings are meat, potatoes, mushrooms, cabbage, fruits, cheese, or berries. And, of course, dumplings should be eaten with a sour cream.

Cabbage rolls (Holubtsi)

Cabbage rolls, usually filled with ground meat, rice, and onions. In some regions they are stewed in a tomato sauce. Holubtsi taste best with sour cream.

Bread (Palianytsia)

Every Ukrainian region has its own borshch recipe. Differences between particular varieties may regard the type of stock used (meat, bone, or both), the type of meat (beef, pork, poultry, etc.), the choice of vegetables and the method of cutting and cooking them. 

Buns (Pampushki)

Ukrainian Cheesecake (Syrnyk)

A classic cottage cheese cake. It has a light structure, usually is not too sweet, and is filled with cherries or raisins. In Lviv, syrnyk is coated with chocolate.
